Lopar

History

Birthplace of St. Marinus, the stonemason who was born in fourth century. Looking for a job, he travels to the other side of the Adriatic. Prosecuted because of his Christian beliefs, he settled on the Titan hill where he built a small church and was gathering the sympathizers. On the bulwarks of the small church the town San Marino (state of the same name) was built.

 

 

Sights

There are two churches in Lopar. Church of St. John (patron of parish Lopar) is located in the centre of the place itself. Church of Blessed Virgin Mary, built in fourteenth century, is a place of pilgrimage and it is celebrated the eighth of November.

 

 

Flora and Fauna

Because of the mild Mediterranean climate Lopar is biotope of many plant and animal species: autochthonous holm oak (Quercus ilex), the Mediterranean Cypress (Cypressus sempervirens), Myrtle (Myrtus communis), Prickly Juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus), Aleppo Pine (Pinus halepensis), Maritime Pine (Pinus maritima), Black Pine (Pinus nigra), shrub species – Spanish Broom (Spartium junceum), Olive (Olea europea), climbing plants – Common Ivy (Hedera helix), Asparagus (Asparagus off)...
In the rocky areas the commonest are immortelle and Common sage (Salvia off) and several endemic species: cro. vučja stopa (Aristolochia croatica), Croatian daisy (Leuchanthemum croaticum), cro. hrvatski jelenjak (Phyllitis hybrida). The biggest autochthonous mammal is rabbit. Here lives his relative cony in a larger number. Among the reptiles, the most numerous is small lizard. Among the snakes, the most numerous is copperhead and aesculapian snake.
There are no asps on Rab. Among the amphibians there are more species of frogs and among the insects the most numerous are butterflies with all kinds of colours and crickets whose music makes a special atmosphere. Here nest many bird species. Lopar underwater is very diverse. In it lives many fish species, shellfishes and other animal species.

Sports and entertainment

Lopar has numerous sport facilities. Facilities on water are diving, windsurfing, Jet Ski, pedal boats..., possibility of renting a boat..., tennis courts, mini golf, aquagan... Cycling will give you a unique experience through paths and side roads surrounded with pines and Mediterranean plants. In the touristic offer are also day trips, panoramic boat trips (excursion to neighbouring islands and islets), seabed sightseeing with glass boat and day trip to the NP Plitvice.

Gastronomy

You can enjoy in meals which are prepared in traditional way, fish, seafood and in vegetables grown in the gardens of Lopar.
